Segment 11

Into Mount Massive wilderness and Twin Lakes

The trail was better today. More contoured, better switch backs. It makes so much difference on your body!

Saw Bravestone again for breakfast and some other hikers. Everyone agreed the climbs we experienced yesterday were the worst. We were comforted by their struggles, sometimes you wonder if it’s just you wrestling with the trail.

Bravestone was going to be in Twin Lakes tonight for a cabin reservation and had a ride arranged from a different trail head. She offered hot showers and electricity, oh my!! Our plan was to camp a mile or so from Twin Lakes and arrive in the morning intime to get our resupply box from the General Store. It was about 10:30 in the morning and we were doing so great we both somehow got the hair-brained idea that we could probably make it to the general store before 6:30 and decide to push for it.

We saw Keith whom we had met on the trail at the Mount Massive trail head with authentic trail magic!! Ice cold snickers and soda and he kept distracting us with more magic possibilities like emptying our trash but we had a goal so we ran away to conquer another mountain.

We exhausted ourselves pushing for miles. No more hour long breaks with our feet in the water. We finally made to the Twin Lakes Village trail connector. We didn’t notice on the map that it connected to a remote dirt and not a highway that we could hitch from adding miles to our hike. We weren’t going to make it on time! We passed the last good water sources for camping. Our goal was to make it to town. I was starting to be concerned we would hurt ourselves, we were pushing too hard. I had Bravestones #. I just reached out to see if she could help us. She rescued us in a big way!! We had service and sent her photos of our DL’s and a selfie and she bought us some dinner from the store, and they gave her our resupply boxes. She had extra towels brought to her cabin for a shower. A HOT shower! What an ANGEL!!! Love her for taking such good care of us. After our visiting, showers, dinner and the charging of things we camped behind the visitor center in a meadow.

This is the sunrise above our tents in the morning.
