April 28th
4001 miles to 4277, 276 miles
We left the hotel later than planned with the time change and decided to be grateful for a relaxed morning.Immediately leaving we were overlooking Lake Powell and the dam. Bright orange and red rocks everywhere, and we rode marveling at all the interesting shapes and erosion patterns.
We drove through Kanab and I thought about my Dad. We talked about him a bit.
We stopped and bought a Bryce Canyon shirt for Bryce.
We did a fast tour of Zion and stopped at a few pullouts to walk around.
There was fresh water running down a cliff side from the recent rain making a pool of water in the sandy creek bottom.
The cati were on the verge of blooming, in a few days they’re going to be in full bloom. The giant tunnel we went through was almost a mile long and it took nearly 3 minutes to get through it!
Construction was started in 1927 with the sole purpose to connect the 3 national parks Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon.
The abilities and grit of people in past eras amazes and inspires me. In 1901 someone invented a cable system so they could drop needed logs for lumber from the mesa top into the canyons below. Wow!
The rock formations are so tall they make you feel small.
It’s such a beautiful place. Will we ever make it back to hike more and backpack? There’s so many things to see and do.
I love the ride through the canyons on the interstate in Utah right before you enter Nevada. Like Zion and Yosemite they are so immense it’s hard to comprehend from photos.
It was a short mile day, it gave time to savor Zion.
We arrived in Vegas before 6…the hotel hot tub we found closes at 7! It was a roof top pool deck with a party vibe. People talking, laughing and dancing.
We were right on Fremont Street and Jay and I love the party vibe. There was live latin music and so many smiling faces and people dancing in the street. So many interesting people and entertainers to watch. It was a fun last night out for us. And it was finally warm again! So grateful to not be cold!
