Segment 24

We slept in! Kat and Jeremy took their goats to the pond so they could all have breakfast. They were interrupted by a couple of bull moose who came to graze in the pond. They brought the goats back to camp and eventually were able to collect their breakfast items.

Jodie and I were each given two paniers to fill with our backpacking supplies so we could hike out with light packs. What a treat!

The hike through the canyon was such a break from the high country. The warm dirt smelled like incense with the smells of the forest mixed in today.

It’s amazing to be up in the high country and see the sites and conquer the mountains but I’m much more comfortable around 10,000 ft. I love to have trees around me and the comfort of the forest feels like coming home.

We reached the Animas River and watched a steam train go by, the Durango to Silverton train, while we ate lunch.

After lunch we started a big climb to the trailhead.

From the Animas River to Molas Pass is a 1,967 feet of elevation gain in 4.8 miles with 35 switchbacks!! Wow! It was quite the climb.

Jodie’s husband Aiden found us a suite in Silverton with soaking pools and a kitchen!! That was wonderful!!
