August 8th
It was quite chilly this morning. Around 7 I looked at my thermometer and noticed it wasn’t quite forty degrees yet. I slept with all the warm things last night and stayed comfortable.
This morning started with a big climb and no reported water for 10 miles. 1,300 feet of climbing in less than 3 miles! As we climbed and warmed up I had to stop and change out of my night time warm clothes and into my sweat soaked and gimmy day time clothes before I started sweating. Jodie mosied on ahead. I walked by a stream about a half mile up the giant hill! Why isn’t this nice water source on the Far Out app when we’re carrying tons of water?!
I continued up the hill. I heard girl chatter behind me, It was Stasha and Jaz! My heart exploded with joy! Stasha was back on trail after her knee injury!!! They had hiked out to a road and found a camper and asked him for a ride to the closest highway so they could get medical attention. He not only brought them all the way to the clinic but waited for them and brought them back to the camp. They also got burgers!!! Magical trail moments! So glad Stasha had such a loyal hiking friend in Jaz who stayed with her through the whole experience! We’re hoping to meet them in Breckenridge on the 10th for dinner.
Someone else had to leave the trail today due to altitude sickness, hopefully a couple days in town and a visit to the clinic and he’ll be back on trail. This elevation is no joke!
I met a man, Jeffrey, celebrating his 50th birthday today on trail! What an awesome birthday! His wife told him to stop thinking about and just go do it!
It’s amazing how many husband or wives are out here with their spouses blessings. We all don’t always have the same dreams and desires. Gravity summed it up nicely, just make sure you and your spouse have something special you both like to do together.
We submitted our climb above 11,000 feet and walked along West Ridge and the Keystone ski area. We had cell service and called our husbands! What a treat!
We thought we were going to do 10 miles today and camp near a small stream, but were really disappointed when we arrived. The stream was shallow and I used a cup to scoop water into our filtration bags. The meadow we were in had a huge mansion at the end staring at us. There wasn’t any camping until you returned to woods and had to dry camp without water. We sat and fitted water and discussed our options. We cooked and ate our dinner. We found a hostel with bunks available and laundry. Then we wouldn’t have to carry full backpacks around town stinky and dirty tomorrow waiting for check in while we did our town chores. So we pushed the last 4 miles to the highway. There’s a free bus service but we ended up getting a ride from a mountain biker headed home and going our direction. Adventurous people always help each other! I love it! They understand the adventure your on.
Today we hit the 100 mile mark, in 8 days!!!
In the last 2 days we hiked segment 6 of the Colorado Trail: 32.3 miles. Elevation gain of 5,196 feet up & 5,968 feet down according to the Colorado Trail Data book!!! Wow!
