August 7
A week on trail today. Sleeping in a campground last night included the luxurys of a pit toilet, freshly pumped water by the camp host and a dumpster! Funny how grateful you can feel for all of those things!
It only sprinkled last night, so the big storm expected on Sunday blew past and the forecast is looking promising!
We are killing it today!! 4.4 miles before stopping for breakfast.
We hiked with Triple Crown (hiked all three long trails within a year for each: The Appalachian Trail the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail) Gravity today. He didn’t take up serious hiking until he was 61! So inspiring!
Jodie and I made it to Georgia Pass at 11,880 feet. Amazing views all around. The clouds were looming and threatening with occasional sprinkles, but no thunder and lightning. There was camping and a water source nearby but we decided to push on another 5 miles to the next creek and better camping and get off the pass. We felt too exposed and vulnerable at the top to camp. After we summited the Colorado Trail joined the Continental Divide Trail.
Our last miles today were so long and painful complicated by a rough rocky section before the camping area. It was hard to stay focused on your every step, choosing your placement carefully and still stumbling with fatigue. When we arrived there many people camped there, another tent city. We learned that Stasha(a friend hiker) had fallen and split her knee open pretty badly. Some of the other hikers had hiked out with her to a dirt road so they could get her to help. Sad end to a big day.
I was so tired that I kept laying down while eating my meal. It seemed like eating was such a chore! I might have gone to bed without brushing my teeth.
We hiked 16.6 miles!!!
